Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these medications must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
