Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Cars, walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.

Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.

The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.

Police then found many other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Police say preliminary tests show the liquid was likely blood from a person.

"There is still no lead as to where it came from; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.

A senior political figure said the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
